New results on the initial orbit determination problem

In the first part of the talk I will present a generalization of an
initial orbit determination (IOD) method devised by O. Mossotti to the
case of topocentric observations of asteroids and Earth satellites.
Then, after briefly recalling the Keplerian integrals (KI) methods for
IOD, I will show some results on their performance when applied to large
datasets of asteroids optical observations. This numerical investigation
represents an important step towards the use of the KI methods to find
orbits from the Isolated Tracklet File (ITF). The ITF is an ever
changing list of unlinked tracklets which is available from the Minor
Planet Center. This is a joint research with Óscar Rodríguez, Giovanni
F. Gronchi, and Robert Jedicke.
